Family planning changes the world.
In the poorest areas around the world, family planning is barely heard of, let alone accessible, and the possibility of having children to support means near starvation. Marginalized and poor women without contraception give birth one baby after the other, and both mother and child suffer. The first child is overlooked to care for the second and consequently they become disadvantaged.
Allowing women to plan their pregnancies not only empowers them; it helps to ensure their own health is not weakened by excessive births in areas with little or no healthcare. Family planning can help steer families away from poverty, as more children means more money needed for food, clothes and education. In short, it allows couples to have the number of children they can afford: physically and financially. This also has an impact on the economy and on the environment.
With access to contraception, women can prevent unwanted pregnancies and stay in school. This provides them with a basic education and improves gender equality. They can also maintain their health and significantly, they can work. Financial contributions provides women with a voice in household decisions, as well as contributing towards the economic growth of the country.
Family planning is not only one of the UN's most important Millennium Development Goals, it also underpins all the work that IPPF does for people all over the globe. From policy change to gender equality, and maternal health services to contraceptive education, family planning transforms communities.
With your help, IPPF can continue to help families stay healthy and educated. This begins with the investment in women and mothers: empowering them to make life-changing decisions.
