Governing Council May 2007

16th Meeting, London, 11-13 May 2007

The 30 members of IPPF’s Governing Council met in London on 11-13 May 2007 to get through an ambitious agenda.

The Panel on Sexual Rights established in November 2006 presented an update on the progress made in drafting a Bill of Sexual Rights.

Governing Council was confident that this Bill will constitute a central piece of IPPF’s work in defending and promoting the sexual rights of all individuals around the globe.

Our recently established Task Force on Governance and Volunteerism presented a draft Code of Good Governance which will be promoted throughout the Federation. This Code is part of an initiative to strengthen the capacity of the governing bodies of IPPF and its 150 Member Associations.

Governing Council accredited 17 Member Associations at its May meeting, bringing the number of accredited full members to 58.

Governing Council also took the difficult decision to expel the Member Association in Argentina from IPPF membership.

This was done because the Association has failed to comply with IPPF’s Standards and Responsibilities of Membership and was not considered to be a viable organization able to respond to the SRHR needs of the people of Argentina.

Governing Council also had the opportunity for an in-depth discussion on resource mobilization, focusing on the new donor aid architecture and its implications for IPPF.

The outcomes of this discussion were:

  • that we will review our existing Policy on Resource Development
  • that we will invest in developing a coordinated global strategy to raise funds across the Federation
  • that we will invest in developing Member Associations’ capacity in resource mobilization
