Dr Garry Dearden

Director of Organizational Effectiveness and Governance


Dr Garry DeardenDr Garry Dearden is a Director of IPPF based in the Federation’s Central Office in London.

Garry Dearden joined IPPF in 1984. He has served the Federation in several technical and managerial positions over the years and has visited over fifty countries in all six regions of IPPF to support the work of Member Associations.

He currently has responsibility for:

  • organizational learning and evaluation
  • knowledge information systems
  • policy development
  • governance
  • and the accreditation of Member Associations.


In 2003, working with IPPF’s volunteer Membership Committee, Garry provided the lead staff support to establish an accreditation system to ensure Member Association compliance with essential standards and responsibilities throughout the Federation.  

He provided the lead staff support to a volunteer Task Force that restructured IPPF’s governance in 1998 and led to fixed term tenure, gender equity and youth involvement on all of IPPF’s governing bodies, and then again in 2008 in a Task Force review that led to IPPF’s Code of Good Governance and an accompanying Governance Handbook.

In 2010, Garry led the Midterm review of IPPF’s Strategic Framework.

Prior to joining IPPF, Garry worked at the New University of Ulster in the north of Ireland. Before that, he carried out a series of evaluation studies of innovative approaches to teaching and learning at Hampshire College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tulane University in the United States, and at the University of Surrey, Southampton University and Queen Mary College, University of London in the United Kingdom.
