Debo's story

Being a volunteer in Gambia

Debo has made a positive difference to her community"Family planning helps people, it makes their lives better".

Debo Cham is a Njaba Kunda District volunteer. She informs people about family planning and works with young people.

"I have been a volunteer for more than 10 years. At first the community opposed my work, but my tactic is not to give up.

I visit a house many times, even if people oppose me, and then they start to listen and decide the information and services I am offering are a good thing, and can improve their lives.

I am proud that I can bring such a good thing to  people".

Since she began her work people talk a lot more about the need to plan a family and space their children.

There is more dialogue between husbands and wives about these things, that is because of Debo and her fellow volunteers' work.

"I have gained a lot from the community and benefited from knowing about family planning, and I want to share my good fortune with my community.

I have benefited personally by learning new things, skills and ideas.

The community know who I am and recognize and respect me more".
