Hadi's story

Being a volunteer in Indonesia

“I want to help others in my area who struggle with drug addiction, that’s why I decided to volunteer for the Kemayoran Drop-In Centre’s outreach programme”.

“I have lived in Kemayoran for most of my life, I know the people and the issues that they struggle with very well”.

Kemayoran is a district in central Jakarta.  It is a low-income area whose population includes a large proportion of marginalized and vulenerable groups, including people who are addicted to drugs and injecting drug users (IDUs).

Hadi himself is addicted to heroin.

He is a peer educator and manages one of the Centre’s safe injection sites, providing clean needs and Information, Education and Communication to local drug users.

The Indonesian Planned Parenthood Association opened the Kemayaran Drop-In Centre in May 2004, and since then it has been providing services, including harm reduction, and an outreach programme to five local districts.

The Kemayoran Drop-In Centre has mapped the area to identify areas of unmet need and they provide socialization as well as stakeholder services to 718 clients. There are four staff, including two development workers, a coordinator and an administrator, and they serve 15-20 clients per day. The Centre relies on local volunteers to help deliver their outreach programme.
