Project example: Nepal

Some of our young volunteers in Nepal

Our Member Association in Nepal campaigned for over seven years engaging with policy makers, service providers, the media and the community to raise awareness of the impact of unsafe abortion.

In September 2002, abortion was finally legalized up to 12 weeks gestation and up to 18 weeks if due to rape or incest.

Niraj volunteers in Nepal

Niraj is one of our young volunteers in Nepal

"As we know that young people are sexually active today, they need complete knowledge on sexual and reproductive health".

"The youth programmes at the Family Planning Association of Nepal attracted me to be involved in the youth activities".

Niraj has volunteered for the Family Planning Association of Nepal since 2003.

"Today I can openly talk about the SRH issues in my family, community and friends. As we know that young people are sexually active today, they need complete knowledge on sexual and reproductive health.

I am proud to be a youth volunteer of IPPF".

He has participated in life skills and leadership training and disseminated sexual and reproductive health information to peers.

He was invited to speak at the first ever National Youth Conference on HIV/AIDS that took place in Sri Lanka in 2008, and presented on ‘SRH as a fundamental right which forms the basis for all rights’; and on the ‘importance of networking’.

"We used the IPPF Charter on Sexual and Reproductive Rights as a tool in our presentation to make clear understanding for the participants about SRH rights.

As a speaker in this conference, I could share the experience gained during my involvement in youth activities in FPA Nepal, and contribute in making this event a success, thereby bringing about a positive and significant change in the fight against HIV and AIDS in Sri Lanka.”
