Worldwide, up to 50 per cent of sexual assaults are
committed against girls younger than 16 years.
An estimated one in three women will be physically or
sexually abused during her lifetime.
The vast majority of incidences of gender-based violence go unreported.
Violence against women results in serious health, social and economic consequences, including:
- a broad range of physical, mental, sexual and reproductive, and maternal health problems
- the inability of girls and women to participate in regular activities, including studies and income-earning activities
- isolation from support systems
- limited ability to care for themselves and their families
IPPF believes that all girls and women, including sex workers, have the right to be free from all forms of gender-based violence, inside and outside of marriage.
The Syrian Family Planning Association, an IPPF Member Association, supports girls and young women affected by gender-based violence and provides confidential, non-judgemental services.
