The International Medical Advisory Panel usually meets twice a year and its views and advice on methods of fertility regulation and other sexual and reproductive health issues are disseminated in the form of IMAP Statements and sent regularly to all Member Associations.
52nd IMAP meeting April 2008
Dr. Nahid Khodakarami from Iran, a new IMAP member, is joining the panel at this meeting.
The main agenda items are
- Review of IMAP statement on “Gender based violence” last reviewed in 2000.
- Review of IMAP statement on “Breastfeeding, fertility and postpartum contraception” last reviewed in 1996.
- Discussion for a new IMAP statement on “Sexual and reproductive health services in crisis situations”
- The panel will also provide an update on “female condoms” and how their use relates to “use of hormonal contraceptive and HIV infection”

The Panel discussed two IMAP statements.
- IMAP statement on Female Genital Mutilation - which was last revised in 2001.
- IMAP statement on comprehensive sexuality education – a new IMAP statement.
IMAP concluded that all types of FGM have health consequences, and "FGM contradicts the IPPF visions as it negates Health Rights".
The revised statement will be published in the December 2007 issue of the Medical Bulletin.
The group discussed recent research outcomes for:
- The use of diaphragm and lubricant gel for HIV prevention
- Visual inspection of cervix with acetic acid
IMAP membership will be expanded to include nursing expertise.

- reviewed a new statement on cervical cancer and HPV vaccine
- discussed male circumcision and HIV with a new statement on this issue
- included an update on medical abortion complications
- an update on microbicide trials
