High level meeting on HIV/AIDS

The high level meeting on HIV/AIDS was held at UN headquarters on 10-11 June 2008 to review the progress made in implementing the 2001 Declaration of Commitment and the 2006 Political Declaration.

This year’s discussions focused on the progress and challenges in scaling up access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support

There will be a Chair’s Summary issued by the President of the General Assembly which will reflect Member States’ statements, as well as the civil society hearing and the interactive panels.

In addition, the civil society caucus produced a statement which was handed to the PGA by the Civil Society Task Force yesterday evening.

There were also caucuses for each regional group, as well as one on youth and another one on women.

IPPF WHR also co-organized a side event on the 10th with UNESCO, UNFPA, and UNAIDS, on 'Overcoming barriers on educating young people on sex and HIV'.

A young person from our Member Association in Jamaica, Sanyoyoko Hoilett, as well as José Angel Córdova, the Minister of Health from Mexico, and Michel Sidibe Deputy Executive Director of UNAIDS, were the speakers at this event.

It was a huge success as we had a young person at every table and there was a half hour for discussions with many Ministers of Health from over forty countries, UN staff, and members of civil society.
