Stigma and discrimination in Mongolia

"It was difficult to hide the hard time, when I hit the rock, but I felt better when my medical doctor and I had a warm and close discussion. I felt and I said to myself: I am now an HIV positive young woman and I need to overcome difficulties and the rest of my life should be meaningful. Every minute of my life is now precious.

But I also feel that I am not alone and things are happenning around me, with the involvement of the community and others.

I don’t like to express all my feelings, but I saw people around me are interested in my life in a different way. Even my family members who are living in other countries, they are asking me to marry and sometimes they dictate that I should be married.

Friends of mine are spreading rumours about me: why am I not married and have no children? They have their own predictions about me.

I feel better when I have discussions with my medical doctor, but I am afraid of people, who I meet in the waiting hall of the Infectious Diseases Center.

In fact when people are having problems with different diseases such as plague, epidemic, tetanus etc, they will get support from their friends, parents and family members.

In history human beings had problems with epidemics such as plague, tetanus etc where millions of people died and many cities and towns were destroyed, but they worked together on them and overcame the problems.

People around me should understand correctly that HIV could arrive any time, any place, if you are not well protected.

Nobody among the HIV positive people in Mongolia chose to get this disease, but they have the virus.

I wish all people around me to be equipped with correct information about HIV and for us to live without fear.

I hope I will have the chance to attend the PLHIV Stigma Index Training and to get equipped with information, which could help HIV positive people. Being HIV positive is not a crime, it is just a disease.

I want to live among the public without fear".

Ms S is 34 years old and lives in Mongolia. Due to the situation in the country, she did not want her photo taken.
