Britain's abortion laws were not restricted on the 19th of May, despite a cross-party attempt to reduce the upper limit of 24 weeks.
There is no scientific reason to reduce the upper time limit for abortion.
The amendments were for reducing the time limits:
To 12 weeks: defeated by 393 votes to 71
To 16 weeks: defeated by 387 votes to 84
To 20 weeks: defeated by 332 votes to 190
To 22 weeks: defeated by 304 votes to 233
The human fertilisation and embryology bill was not primarily about abortion; it was about issues such as stem cell research.
It was used as an attempt to restrict women's right to choose. Fortunately, this has not happened.
