Working with street children

This pioneering project went beyond the usual sexual and reproductive health brief to look at the broader issues of education and empowerment.

Most importantly it ensured that street children themselves played a central role in decision-making throughout.

This ground breaking project has become a model for how rights-based, inclusive programmes can make a real difference in young lives.  Read more...

Young People's Rights

Young people have a right to the information and services they need to make responsible decisions about their lives.

Since the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in 1994, the international community has consistently reaffirmed the right of young people to appropriate reproductive health information and services that safeguard their rights to privacy, confidentiality, respect and informed consent.

It has also reaffirmed that the rights and responsibilities of parents to provide guidance in such matters should not prevent young people from having access to the information and services they need to enjoy good reproductive health.

A Rights-based Approach - CD-ROM
Our CD-ROM guide to implementing a rights-based approach in Youth programmes.

Making the rights-based approach a reality
IPPF strongly supports the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people by encouraging positive attitudes towards young people’s sexuality and creating an ‘enabling environment’ within which young people are able to realize their sexual and reproductive health rights.

In line with this commitment, IPPF runs a course on implementing a rights-based approach to adolescent sexual and reproductive health.

Since it began in 2002, young people and adults from all parts of the world have attended. They are all experts in the field and committed to adolescent sexual and reproductive health, yet adopting a rights-based approach to their work remained a challenge.

The course – and the involvement of young people - has been successful in translating the principles of human and sexual rights into workable and practical components.

Participants tell us that they value the openness with which particularly sensitive topics such as abortion, sexual orientation and sexual violence are discussed.
