7th April 2008 – Day 1

The priority theme of this year’s Commission on Population and Development (CPD) is ‘Population distribution, urbanization, internal migration and development’.

There are two resolutions being negotiated:

1) Population distribution, urbanization, internal migration and development and

2) Work programme in the field of population.

In her opening statement, Thoraya Obaid (UNFPA) thanked the following non-governmental organizations for their statements:

  • IPPF
  • World Youth Alliance
  • PAI

saying that their “partnership and leadership is greatly appreciated”.

The main points UNFPA want to highlight is that urbanization can play a positive role - if countries plan ahead and respond with policies that address urban growth.

However, urgent action is required for basic social services, with explicit participation of the poor in regard to their needs and rights. She continued by saying that investment in reproductive health and family planning is one of the best ways to address urban growth and reach Millenium Development Goal 5.

UNFPA also want to stress the importance of increasing funding for the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Plan of Action so as to reach the health related MDGs.

The G77 statement said that “it was pleased with the significant increase in funding for HIV/AIDS activities within the last several years, but hastens to draw attention to the need for the full implementation of the ICPD PoA. Full implementation of the PoA particularly the RH goal (sic) has a direct impact on the ability to achieve the MDGs linked to health and social and economic outcomes in the areas of children, mothers, HIV/AIDS, gender, poverty and employment.”
