IPPF at the summit
IPPF represented civil society at the Interactive Roundtables on the Millennium Development Goals, for meeting the goals of health and education at the recent summit.
We partnered with UNFPA to host a side event: 1.8 billion people strong: young people drive development to highlight the role of young people in development and the MDGs.
Progress towards achieving Millennium Development Goals 3, 4, 5 and 6 has been mixed.
The world is not yet on track to meeting the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of millions of women, men and young people who still lack universal access to sexual and reproductive health and services.
What is IPPF doing?
Throughout the summer IPPF has been working with other civil society partners to influence the Draft Summit Declaration document, to make sure it recognises the need for universal access to SRH services.
We also mobilized support for the UN Secretary General's Global Strategy for Women and Children, ensuring the document recognises the role that access to family planning and sexual and reproductive health services play in reducing maternal mortality and morbidity.
In support of the Global Strategy IPPF made commitments to improve maternal health between now and 2015.

Reducing unmet need for contraception by 100 million
IPPF is working with the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition (RHSC) to help meet the family planning needs of 100 million women by 2015.
The HandtoHand campaign is the RHSC’s response to the United Nations Secretary General's Global Strategy for Women and Children.
Members of the RHSC have pledged to meet the needs of 80 percent of women.
Meeting this challenge will mean:
- 96 million fewer unintended pregnancies
- 54 million fewer abortions
- 110,000 fewer mothers dying in pregnancy and childbirth
- 1.4 million fewer infant deaths
IPPF was the first RHSC member to pledge its commitment to this campaign.
