Caring for present and future generations: the sexual and reproductive health of young Maoris

New Zealand Family Planning (NZFP)

In New Zealand there is a marked difference between the sexual and reproductive health among the Maori and non-Maori communities.

Maori begin having sex at a younger age, have less knowledge of contraception, safer sex practices and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and experience higher rates of teenage pregnancy and STIs than non-Maori.

The aim of this project is to develop a robust model for the provision of sexual and reproductive health information and services based on Maori cultural beliefs and values.

The project will particularly target young Maori men to improve their involvement in making sexual and reproductive health decisions with their partners.
