Fianakaviana Sambatra (FISA) is the family planning association in Madagascar.
Established in 1967, the Family Planning Association of Madagascar (FISA) provides
various sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, including:
- family planning
- prevention and management of HIV/AIDS
- provision of SRH information, education and communication materials
Theses services are provided in six regions through our nine clinics and affiliate organizations.
We target mainly young people, women, sex workers and rural populations.
In 2006 FISA served 19,895 clients, the majority being poor or socially excluded.
The role and accomplishments of FISA are respected by the Madagascar government and
donors.
FISA plays an active role in the formulation of national SRH policies, with the development of an HIV/AIDS workplace policy being one in a series of recent achievements.
Still, the SRH burden in Madagascar remains troubling for FISA.
Laws around safe abortion are very restrictive, maternal and infant mortality rate stands at 550 and 72 respectively, with modern contraceptive prevalence at 18 per cent.
