Mexfam is one of the most effective Family Planning Associations in Latin America.
We provide 8% of the national family planning supply despite the social and economic crises upsetting the country.
Mexfam works in 25 of the 32 Mexican states.
MEXFAM's mission is to provide quality family planning and reproductive health services and sex education.
We aim to reach marginal sectors of the population not served by the national programme, specifically poor people, young people and men.
Among MEXFAM's innovative programmes is the Community doctors programme, through which approximately 300 doctors provide family planning and other health services in rural and urban marginal areas.
MEXFAM has extensive programmes in schools and with youth groups to provide family life education through films, dialogue with parents and teachers, and other activities.
MEXFAM's Gente Joven (Young People) programme reaches teenagers in their communities, and trains some of them to be youth promoters to counsel their peers about family life and reproductive health.
Some of the materials produced include the video 'With your Hands in Your Pockets' which focuses on teenage pregnancy; 'Like Buddies' on peer pressure and drug use; and 'Only once', about AIDS.
One of MEXFAM's important programmes is the 'Community Health and Family Planning Promotion' in rural areas. MEXFAM established medical centres in the main cities across the country. We conduct family planning programmes for men in factories and in the armed forces.
A UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) funded project helped MEXFAM create a network of teachers in high-priority areas, who received 4 years training, and printed and distributed educational materials, flipcharts, videos and audiovisual materials. 1,500 teachers were trained, 98,000 young people and 16,000 parents took part in the project.
