Map of Belize

Member Association: Belize

The Belize Family Life Association (BFLA) was founded in 1985 and is the only organization in Belize dedicated primarily to family planning.

We have four centres providing reproductive health  services including:

  • Pap smears
  • pregnancy testing
  • contraceptives
  • health education

BFLA has established an outreach programme using mobile clinics that travel across the country providing family planning information and services in areas that are not easily accessible, and that need family life education and services.

In response to the needs of Belize’s very large adolescent population, we have taken the lead in family life education. We conduct sessions at primary and secondary schools and organize youth awareness workshops for teenagers in and out of school. We also support core youth groups in the districts.

To increase the scope of this programme, BFLA trains volunteers, health personnel, teachers, pharmacists and community leaders to act as educators.

BFLA is involved in the National AIDS Task Force and sponsors Family Life Week with the Ministry of Health and Social Services and other development agencies.

Along with the Belize Organisation for Women and Development, we sponsor the Women’s Wellness Day Fair during National Women’s Week.

The fair is an opportunity for many women to obtain an array of free services. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. there is a series of preventive health services available to women free of charge, including:

  • Pap smears
  • cervical cancer screening
  • dental and eye examinations

There is a series of one hour workshops on topics such as breast cancer, AIDS/Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), as well as on physical fitness and cosmetology.

We are expanding our services into the wider area of reproductive and sexual health, including:

  • lab-backed Pap smears and STI services
  • the establishment of a teenage centre and peer counselling programme for out-of-school teenagers
  • pre-and post-natal services for adolescent mothers
  • the facilitation of community discussion and action on sexual health issues
