Member Association: Canada

Planned Parenthood Federation Canada (PPFC) was founded in 1964 as a federation of 51 affiliated family planning associations operating in nine provinces.

Our affiliates provide direct services to Canadians across the nation and northward into the Canadian Arctic. The national office, which focuses on education and advocacy, is developing a Sexual Information and Resources Clearing House (SIRCH).

PPFC played a key role in the fight to legalise family planning in Canada and has remained a champion of reproductive rights, as well as raising money for international family planning work.

PPFC supports projects in the developing world, often in collaboration with CIDA. PPFC is interested in, and continues to fund, women and development projects in conjunction with family planning in our sister organisations in the Western Hemisphere Region.

We also fund other projects such as family planning centres in poor areas and youth programmes.

Our mission is to create awareness and support among policy makers and the general public regarding sexual health needs and family planning issues.

PPFC works to ensure that all Canadians have access to universal, reliable information and services in order to make informed decisions related to their sexual and reproductive health and behaviour.

The health and well-being of women and their families are determined by a complex set of factors, including their economic, social and physical environment, biological factors, and health behaviours.

Sexual and reproductive health is no less dependant on these factors. People continue to live in poverty; sexual, physical and psychological abuse are common occurrences.

PPFC and our affiliates have continued to work in several key areas. In recent years, PPFC has responded to the Report of the Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies, contributed  a Brief to the National Forum on Health and participated in the development of the Framework for Action on Sexual and Reproductive Health.

We have developed a process to establish national standards for the delivery of counselling, education and clinic services in the area of sexual and reproductive health care.
