PPAG: Making history in Ghana
Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) was the first organization to tackle population issues in Ghana.
Established in 1967, we are now the country’s main provider of family planning and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health(SRH) services.
In our clinics and outreach visits, we provide our target group of youth, men and women with the following services:
- post-abortion care
- maternal and child health
- infertility management
- family planning
- Voluntary counselling and testing
- treatment of minor ailments
- SRH services targeting men such as management of erectile dysfunction
The outreach programme is run by the staff, peer educators, and non-traditional distributors, who conduct behaviour change communications, encourage male involvement in SRH, distribute contraceptives and offer some aspects of clinical services.
All this hard work has seen the number of clients rise, with a massive 958,608 clients being served in 2006 alone.
Of these, 86,948 were clients under the Couple Year of Protection programme.
We have repositioned ourselves as an efficient contractor of SRH services for government departments and other NGOs, whose staff PPAG trains on facility management and provision of services at the community level.
The maternal mortality rate of 540, modern contraceptive prevalence of 19 percent; and less than half of the births being attended to by skilled personnel, are some of the on-going challenges.
