GFPA: Transforming SRH lives of Gambians
The Gambia Family Planning Association (GFPA)was set up in 1968 as the country’s only organization that catered for the family planning needs of Gambian women and couples.
The Gambia Family Planning Association (GFPA) has grown over the years to become the leading provider of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services in the country.
GFPA offers comprehensive, quality and gender-sensitive SRH services that range from:
-
family planning
-
Voluntary counselling and testing
-
treatment of sexually transmitted infections
-
antenatal and post-natal care
-
screens for cancers of the reproductive system
-
provides
infertility treatment and counselling
-
Part of our objective is to ensure these services are accessed by poor and under-served communities, through promoting the SRH rights of couples and individuals using advocacy, and providing information and education.
We also conduct social marketing campaigns for contraceptives and outreach visits.
In 2006, 207,669 clients were served by GFPA. Between 2001 and 2006, we were part of the multisectoral team that helped develop and revise the National Reproductive Health policy.
Despite our many successes, contraceptive prevalence is still only nine per cent, maternal mortality rates are still high at 540, as is the total fertility rate at 4.2 children per woman.
