Member Association: Indonesia

The Indonesian Planned Parenthood Association (IPPA) started the family planning movement in 1957 by providing family planning advice and services, despite opposition from the government and religious leaders.

Our present role is to increase knowledge and understanding, positive behaviour and attitudes toward family planning and sexual and reproductive health among young people and couples.

The Lentera project, started by a group of young volunteers at the Yogyakarta Chapter of the IPPA, carries out ground-breaking work in serving vulnerable young people on the fringes of society:

  • street children
  • gay men
  • transvestites
  • female sex workers

Traditional birth attendants deliver around two thirds of children at  village level: they have been a major part of the maternal and child health care system for a long time.

IPPA's Community Distribution Contraceptive Programme (CDCP) in South Kalimantan uses 21 traditional birth attendants amongst other health personnel. This programme has been extended to other regions.
