Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka (FPASL) complements the government health services with a limited number of clinics, one in Colombo and one in Kandy.
The clinics offer a comprehensive range of sexual and reproductive health services including contraception, subfertility, counselling and diagnostic services.
FPASL works closely both with the Minsitry of Health and decentralised government agencies.
The government recognizes four 'mother' non-governmental organizations (NGOS), one of which is FPASL, and these nurture smaller NGO's within Sri Lanka.
We developed a highly successful contraceptive retail sales programme, and supply around 80 percent of the condoms and 50 percent of the oral contraceptives sold in Sri Lanka.
FPASL:
- promotes family planning as a basic human right
- addresses issues for young people
- advocates to increase political commitment to reproductive health education
- aims to foster community involvement in projects
Male involvement and female empowerment is encouraged and supported and FPASL addresses the issue of unsafe abortion.
We aim to provide sexual and reproductive health services, particularly to under-served groups and increase sustainability and cost recovery of services and projects.
We provide educational programmes on population and sexual health for young people, both in and out of school. The Alokaya centre for young people covers issues such as sexual and reproductive health, marriage, family issues and drug use.
'Praja Shanthi', is a rural community motivation project, which encourages use of family planning and health services in areas of low contraceptive prevalence.
The contraceptive retail sales programme, oral contraceptives and condoms supplied by USAID and IPPF, are sold in retail outlets and widely advertised using mass media.
A research and evaluation service includes clinical contraceptives research, investigation of menstrual regulation and abortion rates, and the monitoring and evaluation of projects.
FPASL's advocacy programme with political and religious leaders focuses on issues, including the liberalization of abortion laws.
A training centre holds regular training sessions for our staff and volunteers, as well as outside organizations. The centre generates income through role-plays and folk art, and gives advice by mail service.
