Advocating to change lives

Established in 1996, Namibian Family Planning Association (NAPPA) is assisting people to access sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, by advocating for these issues
from a human rights perspective.

Although NAPPA does not offer clinical
services, we have excelled in our advocacy and educational programmes, targeting young
people in and out of school and young people living with HIV/AIDS.

We provide intensive peer education programmes at our multi-purpose youth resource centres, where young people receive SRH information on a wide range of issues such as adolescent pregnancy, and prevention and management of HIV/AIDS.

Other issues we advocate for in collaboration with other organizations include gender based violence, and abolition of restrictive abortion laws.

In 2006 we were able to reach 12,567 clients with information and educational materials on various SRH matters; greatly improving the SRH of many
young people.

The HIV prevalence rate of 23.8 percent among females and 15.4 percent among males;
maternal mortality rate of 300 and total fertility rate of 3.5 are some of the challenges we have to deal with.
