New Zealand Family Planning has 32 clinics offering a range of sexual and reproductive health services.

Services common across all clinics include:

  • contraceptive advice and prescriptions
  • testing and treatment of sexually transmissible infections
  • pregnancy testing and advice
  • cervical screening

Some clinics also offer vasectomies for male clients.

New Zealand Family Planning also has 23 school-based clinics, predominantly in high-needs areas.

These clinics are based in secondary schools (young people aged 13 to 18) and offer contraceptive advice and prescriptions, testing and treatment of sexually transmissible infections, and pregnancy testing and advice.

We also have health promoters at 15 locations across the country.

The health promoters work with schools, with parents and caregivers, community groups, on marae (a Maori meeting place) and in prisons leading courses on sexual and reproductive health.

Sexuality education became a compulsory element of the New Zealand secondary school curriculum in 2001 and many schools are using family planning expertise to either run courses for students, or to improve the skills of their own teaching staff.

The third component of the work undertaken by the organization is advocating and lobbying on issues affecting sexual and reproductive health.

Family Planning works closely with the New Zealand Parliamentarians Group on Population and Development, ensuring both domestic and global population issues have a high profile.

Communicating with diverse audiences on issues of sexual and reproductive health is a priority.

The website www.familyplanning.org.nz has recently been revamped and work is underway to update www.theword.org.nz –a website aimed at young New Zealanders.

Additionally, we produce a range of resources across all areas of sexual and reproductive health, many of which are translated into other languages reflecting the change demographic of the country.
