Member Association: South Africa

PPASA enjoys unrivalled history and experience

Since our establishment in 1932, the Planned Parenthood Association of South Africa
(PPASA), has evolved each decade in response to the need of our clients.

In 1995 we were influential in the liberalization of abortion laws.

At the moment, PPASA works in 9 provinces providing comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services to our target groups of:

  • 'men in shebeens', (local and home based beer halls) and football stadiums
  • schoolteachers
  • refugees
  • internally displaced persons
  • sex workers
  • former prisoners
  • counseling newly married couples

Services provided to these critical groups comprise:

  • family planning
  • diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections
  • provision of emergency contraception
  • pregnancy testing
  • voluntary counseling and testing (VCT)
  • community based care

We also undertake social mobilization and peer education through Department of Health clinics as part of our outreach programmes.

Other activities involve disseminating information, education and communication in government provincial hospitals, while the youth arm collaborates with the Department of Health and Ministry of Education in implementing the 'Men as Equal Partners Program' in schools and communities.

HIV positive clients also serve on the PPASA advisory board.

In 2006 we served 50,000 clients, of which 29,000 were poor or socially excluded.

PPASA has written an Advocacy Policy on SRH, HIV/AIDS and abortion that is also used by other stakeholders.

A host of challenges face PPASA.

Some of these are: HIV prevalence of 18.8 percent; high teenage pregnancy; high incidence of rape; and slightly over half women using modern contraceptives.
