Safe abortion services: New funding launch for local projects

A new round of funding has been launched to improve access to safe abortion care for poor and vulnerable women and girls around the world.

The Safe Abortion Action Fund (SAAF) is issuing a call for applications to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) with projects that address the issue of promoting safe abortion and/or preventing unsafe abortion. This may include the entire spectrum of activities from service delivery to advocacy for policy change or research.

The maximum grant amount is USD $160,000 for 3 years. The deadline for applications is 31 March 2013.

The fund, set up in 2006 as a multi-donor programme and administered by IPPF, has so far supported 85 projects worldwide, reaching 380,000 women and training 6,000 health care providers.

SAAF focuses on the needs of the marginalised and most vulnerable women and girls, funding projects that provide abortion services within a comprehensive package of reproductive health services. It seeks to improve services in countries where poor access to contraception and to sexual and reproductive health services, and restrictive abortion laws force women and girls to seek unsafe abortion.

By reducing unsafe abortion-related complications, SAAF aims to lower maternal death – an important step towards meeting Millennium Development Goal 5 (MDG 5) to reduce maternal mortality by 75% by 2015.

SAAF funded, locally-led initiatives have achieved change in legislation in Uruguay, developed new approaches to advocacy in Kenya, and provided training on safe abortion advocacy and legal reform in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Nepal, Tanzania and Pakistan.  Other projects, such as in Costa Rica, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Sudan and the Philippines, are improving evidence and the knowledge base on the unsafe abortion.

Unsafe abortion facts

  • 21.6 million women and girls seek unsafe abortion each year
  • Unsafe abortion accounts for 13% of all maternal deaths
  • 8 million women each year suffer complications from unsafe abortion
  • Unsafe abortion is the cause of 47,000 maternal deaths each year
