The Arab World Region covers 14 countries with diverse socio-cultural challenges. Together, they operate a network of 1,200 service points. Social, geographic, demographic, cultural, ideological and political circumstances are particularly challenging in the region, and the range of initiatives run by Member Associations is correspondingly diverse.

Service delivery in the Arab World Region in 2011:

  • 800,000 contraceptive services
  • 575,000 condoms distributed
  • 930,000 services provided to young people
  • 345,000 HIV-related services
  • 69% of Member Associations advocating for reduced restrictions and/or increased access to safe abortion services

In addition to services, here are a few special initiatives:

  • The Syrian Family Planning Association operates fully-equipped mobile sexual and reproductive health clinics that travel up to 125kms from Damascus to tiny villages that have no local health facilities
  • The Sudanese Member Association conducts intensive outreach programmes to deliver antiretroviral drugs to vulnerable groups and to eliminate HIV-related stigma
  • The Association Mauritanienne pour la Promotion de la Famille is spearheading a campaign to end the widespread and brutal practice of female genital mutation (FGM)
