Doubling Down on Anti-Racism Efforts in Sexual and Reproductive Health: A Call to Action

As we join together to commemorate the International Day Against Racial Discrimination, it becomes increasingly apparent that we must address the lingering colonial legacies within the realm of sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Despite our collective commitment to rooting out racism and discrimination in this sector, it's clear that our programs, research endeavors, and advocacy initiatives have not escaped the pervasive influence of colonialism.

The Global Comprehensive Abortion Care Initiative (GCACI) improves access to quality abortion care and contraception in IPPF Member Association clinics. The Parivar Swasthya Kendra (PSK) clinic outside Mumbai sees a wide range of clients from the underserved communities in the district. The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) opened the clinic at the request, and need, of a local fisherwomen’s group.

Women and girls are disproportionately affected in humanitarian crises and face multiple sexual and reproductive health challenges in these contexts. IPPF has been providing much needed support to vulnerable communities through our global federation of member associations, who provide contextualised, timely and tailored interventions drawing on local partners' knowledge and expertise. However, recent shifts in the global political landscape are concerning and threaten to undermine IPPF's mission and impact on the ground.
