Western Hemisphere
The 38 countries in the Western Hemisphere Region present a variety of challenging policy environments and service delivery issues. Collectively, the Member Associations operate 25,000 service points.Service delivery in the Western Hemisphere Region in 2011:
12.7 million contraceptive services
53 million condoms distributed
12 million sexual and reproductive health services provided to young people
5.6 million HIV-related services
810,000 abortion-related services
A few examples of programmes in the region that advocate for policy changes and deliver services to the most vulnerable:
In Bolivia, the Centro de Investigación, Educación y Servicios (CIES) is leading a country-wide HPV vaccination programme for 9-13-year-old girls in the most vulnerable communities to reduce their risk of cervical cancer
In Brazil, BEMFAM provides sexual and reproductive health care and contraception to health personnel in 1,000 municipalities
By convening a civil society coalition and working with unusual technical partners, MEXFAM achieved a major advocacy success: the government increased its allocation for contraceptives by US$8 million
In Suriname, Member Association Stichting Lobi provides nearly 75% of the country’s sexual and reproductive health services
