The International Planned Parenthood Federation is a global service provider and a leading advocate of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for all. We are a worldwide movement of national organisations working with and for communities and individuals.

 

Based within the Programmes Division in our London Central Office, the   Chief Medical Advisor is a newly funded role that will provide strategic advice to IPPF’s programme and service delivery, including global restricted funded projects with focus on abortion and family planning (but also including other SRH projects, as required). In collaboration with the Technical Team, it will lead clinical governance and expertise in support of IPPF and its Member Associations and engage with external stakeholders to further the achievements of our strategic objectives and Business Plan.

 

The postholder will lead the clinical and technical implementation of specific SRH programmes including the Global Comprehensive Abortion Care Initiative (GCACI) and Cote d’Ivoire Consortium to increase access to comprehensive abortion care; lead clinical governance efforts to ensure technical excellence and quality of care in the provision of SRH services, and provide guidance on issues related to expanding access to contraceptive and safe abortion commodities and pharmacovigilance; including advising the IPPF medical abortion commodities database and registration and roll out of new products, and working with the Supply Chain Management Team on quality assurance in procurement. They will also provide strategic leadership to shape and advance SRH and rights including abortion and contraception programming in IPPF; and identify new funding opportunities and provide technical input into bid proposals as necessary.

 

The successful candidate will have a medical degree, as well as a post graduate degree in public health (or a health related qualification). They will significant experience in providing sexual and reproductive health services, including safe abortion - ideally gained in a developing country setting.  They will also have experience of working with service providers and clinical facilities on provision of SRH services, experience of providing training and technical support to clinic staff and service providers, and experience of gender and women’s issues.

 

In order to carry out this role, the successful candidate will be a strong leader with excellent interpersonal skills (in particular the ability to engage and influence).  They will also have significant and demonstrable political leadership and technical expertise in areas of safe abortion and contraception.

 

They will have excellent analytical skills, the ability to work independently as well as within a team (including with external partners, and collaborating globally and virtually) and excellent time management skills. With a requirement for excellent English written and verbal communication skills, other languages (especially French) would be an asset. There will be a requirement to travel internationally, the ability to think and operate strategically, work with people from diverse backgrounds and be supportive of a woman’s right to choose and to have access to safe abortion care.
