An external trustee, Isatou is a Gambian feminist leader, development practitioner, and former Vice President of The Gambia, with over 30 years of experience in governance, gender equality, and women’s rights advocacy. She is Executive Director of the Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children (GAMCOTRAP), which she co-founded to advance sexual and reproductive health and eliminate harmful traditional practices. Isatou previously served as Minister for Trade, Regional Integration, Industry and Employment, Minister of Health and Social Welfare, and later Vice President of The Gambia from 2017 to 2022. A long-standing advocate for women’s empowerment and policy reform, she has advised multiple UN and regional bodies and led research and consultancy work across Africa. She holds a PhD in Development Studies from the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex and an MA in Development Studies (Women and Development) from the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague and is based in The Gambia.
