IPPF started its journey in 1952, when 8 family planning associations joined together to fight for a cause.
60 years later and the organization is nearly 20 times larger. It works in 172 countries, delivers millions of services all over the world. And drives major changes in global policy.
Together, IPPF’s family makes up the largest sexual and reproductive health and rights organization in the world.
None of this would have been achieved without the untiring efforts of IPPF’s staff and volunteers, and our partners in government, civil society and business.
There is so much the Federation can be proud of: it continues to improve the health of millions by contributing to health systems strengthening around the world. It provides services where no government facilities exist, it trains health workers, reacts rapidly in emergency situations and provides expertise that others can learn from.
And, at this year’s Family Planning Summit in London, IPPF made an unprecedented commitment to treble the number of women’s and girls’ lives saved each year by 2020.
That means that, by 2020, IPPF’s family planning services alone will have saved the lives of 54,000 women and girls, averted 46.4 million unintended pregnancies and prevented 12.4 million unsafe abortions.
Looking ahead, the next couple of years are a crucial juncture for the Federation, a chance to make the case for sexual and reproductive rights at international high level consultations.
We have announced "Vision 2020", our commitment to urge governments to prioritize sexual rights on the global development agenda.
That’s why this year, it’s not just IPPF’s 60th anniversary we are marking but a golden moment for reproductive health and rights. Our chance to create better, healthier, more sustainable communities
The stakes are high: the decisions we make over the coming months have the potential to make a great and lasting impact on poverty reduction and human development.
