Asociación Pro-Bienestar de la Familia Colombiana
The Asociación Pro-Bienestar de la Familia Colombiana (PROFAMILIA) has service points, including permanent clinics and mobile facilities, and operates a national contraceptive marketing programme through hundreds of local marketing outlets. It provides a large portion of the country’s family planning capacity.
Services provided include contraceptive counselling, antenatal and post-natal care, maternal and child health advice, and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, and AIDS. Additional health challenges in Colombia include respiratory infections, acute diarrhoeal disease, dehydration and sickness caused by intestinal parasites. PROFAMILIA’s work extends into these areas.
Central to the organization’s work is the dissemination of SRH information to young people, in particular, and the targeting of specific vulnerable and marginalized communities including slum areas with high concentrations of rural migrants, low levels of literacy, and substantial fertility levels and infant mortality rates.
